Phase 1: Explore

Invoke the planning skill to understand what you're designing and why.

  1. Gather design requirements — what problem is the UI solving? Who uses it?
  2. Explore the existing codebase for UI patterns, design tokens, component libraries
  3. Identify constraints — framework, styling approach, existing conventions, responsive requirements
  4. Get explicit approval on scope before designing

Do not skip this phase. Even "obvious" UI changes benefit from understanding the landscape first.


Phase 2: Design

Invoke the frontend-design skill to shape the interface.

  1. Audit existing UI components and patterns
  2. Establish tokens — colors, typography, spacing, if not already defined
  3. Build components — from primitives up, following the project's conventions
  4. Ensure responsiveness — test across viewport sizes, mobile-first
  5. Refine hierarchy — visual priority, focal points, noise reduction

This is the core creative phase. Build with discipline — every color from the palette, every size from the scale, every space from the system.


Phase 3: Accessibility Audit

Invoke the accessibility skill to validate the design for all users.

  1. Run baseline automated checks
  2. Verify semantic HTML structure
  3. Validate color contrast ratios
  4. Test keyboard navigation for all interactive elements
  5. Verify screen reader compatibility
  6. Document findings

Do not skip this phase. Accessibility is not optional. An interface that excludes users is not finished.


Phase 4: Review

Invoke the aegis agent for code review of the design implementation.

  • Review component API design, token usage, accessibility compliance
  • Address all critical findings before proceeding
  • Address warnings where reasonable

If Aegis is not installed, fall back to the code-review skill for a single-pass review.


Phase 5: Handoff

Deliver the completed design work and suggest next steps.

  1. Summarize what was built — components, tokens, patterns established
  2. Note any design decisions and their rationale
  3. Highlight accessibility compliance level achieved
  4. Suggest follow-up actions:
    • Ironclad — "The design is woven. Ironclad can build the feature logic around these components."
